Growing up during “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland, stories of violent conflict were an everyday occurrence for me. Ordinary citizens’ day-to-day lives were impacted by the discord and the daily news was full of stories of bombings and shootings. Although I escaped the most serious implications of the strife, I had attributed my ability to tolerate a high level of stress and uncertainty to my experiences while living in Northern Ireland.
