Demographics are proving to be both a blessing and a curse for ophthalmology. For two decades, we have heard how the aging baby boomer generation would increase patient demand for ophthalmic services. I always considered that to be a good thing. What I did not anticipate, what now seems so obvious, is that our practice population lacks sufficient age diversity to support the replacement of high-end jobs the baby boomers are leaving and the entry-level jobs made available when the labor force is promoted up.
