While preparing to write this column, I looked back to the one I wrote last March for the May/June 2020 issue of AE. We were in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although fear and uncertainty were underlying themes throughout the country, that AE column focused on the goodness, compassion, and resiliency of the human spirit and the unsung heroes among us. Fast forward to March 2021. Multiple COVID-19 vaccines have been approved; millions are being administered each day. State-mandated restrictions are easing. COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are decreasing, and though variants are emerging, vaccines have been effective against these mutations. Schools are re-opening and spring is here. Hope and optimism are gradually replacing last year’s fear and uncertainty. The human spirit is still alive and well.
