When I started working in the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) industry, the status quo for hospital nurses included regular weekend schedules, night shifts, and holidays away from loved ones. Naturally, the allure of day shifts, a Monday-through-Friday schedule, and no “on call” or holiday workdays was enough to convince registered nurses (RNs) to opt out of hospitals and into ASCs—for lower pay, no less. Although ASCs could not compete on wages and benefits, RNs felt the quality of life differential and collegial ASC culture more than made up for the wage gap.
