Cataract surgery, which involves many facets and nuances that range from visual restoration to treatment of refractive errors, is the second-most frequent surgical procedure performed by ophthalmologists on Medicare beneficiaries. Considering this volume, scrutiny by Medicare and third-party payors is likely. For a few months during the Public Health Emergency (PHE), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) suspended Medicare Fee-For-Service (FFS) medical reviews conducted by the various entities affiliated with CMS. However, since Aug. 3, 2020, reviews have resumed and continue to increase.
