In late March of 2020, our clinic leadership team and I huddled, masked and distanced, in what we dubbed the “war room,” the conference room that would become our home over the next six weeks. “Crisis reveals character,” I said in the most inspiring voice I could muster, as they eyed me warily. We had a seemingly insurmountable task before us. Following our governor’s executive order, we shut down elective surgeries—the lifeline of our business—in both of our ASCs. We also closed five of our six locations, consolidating care for post-operative patients, urgent care, and emergencies in our home office. With thousands of appointments on the books, we had the task of canceling them all, then sorting them, ensuring appropriate appointments were rescheduled in our home office and the canceled appointments were tracked for future scheduling. The resulting list of logistical problems we needed to solve seemed endless.
