The New Information Blocking Rule - What Does It Mean for My Practice?

Since April 5, 2021, healthcare providers have been required to comply with the Information Blocking Final Rule (IBFR), which is aimed at making medical information more easily accessible to patients and among providers. But what does this entail? The Final Rule, developed by The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), implements Section 4004 of the 21st Century Cares Act. These provisions authorized HHS to regulate practices that impede the free flow of electronic health information (EHI).
