Finding Breathing Room in the Pandemic

In March 2020, at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in Texas, we were looking to find work that employees could do from home. Many employees were rightfully concerned about losing hours and pay before the new federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) act passed, expanding Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) rights. We had canceled or delayed our non-emergent appointments, but other appointments were essential for many patients to retain eyesight. Many staff had children who were not going to go back to school after Spring Break. Some staff were concerned about exposure to COVID-19. The news bombarded us daily with grim projections. In short, our leaders spent a large amount of time trying to allay fears for both the staff and the patients.
