Everyone knows there is no such thing as goodwill. I recently heard the above statement from an associate being offered the opportunity to buy-in to a practice. It’s one I have heard countless times over my 30-plus years in ophthalmology. Negotiating the value of intangible assets (aka goodwill) can be exasperating and requires an open mind. Therefore, administrators and current owners should work to stave off statements like the one above by educating new associates during their initial employment.
