For its first nine years, Amazon — launched in a Seattle garage in 1994 to sell books online —didn’t turn a profit. Unlike Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, you can’t run in the red, but you can take a page from his playbook. Flexibility, marketplace adaptability, and open-mindedness are all aspects of agility.2 Not every new idea, technology, or innovation will work for your practice, but the administrator who stays on top of trends is the one who’s rarely surprised or blindsided. “You have to know what you don’t know. You have to keep seeking,” says Laurie Brown, MBA, COMT, COE, CPC, CPMA, LSSYB of VMG Health. “I don’t want to be surprised by something I should have known, and I didn’t know.”
