Bio: I was fortunate to join Raleigh Ophthalmology in 1978, becoming the manager one year later. Through the years, the practice has grown to 8 board certified physicians, offering subspecialty care in Cornea, Retina, Glaucoma, Pediatrics, and Oculoplastics. We have 2 office locations and 1 optical shop. Although providing typical ophthalmic management services, my passion is staff development and support for a cohesive group of physicians to sustain a practice we all value. I have been a proud member of ASOA since 1997.
Advice I would have given myself when I started my career: Get to know your physicians--their hopes, expectations, style. Be present in the clinic--take the time to get to know your employees. Learn as much as you can about their job responsibilities--all departments--it's much more interesting than sitting in your office all day. Take full advantage of the resources provided by ASOA and your peers through eye mail--can't stress this enough.
