Benchmarking is Always Useful, Even in Unprecented Times

It has been satisfying to see the resilience of the ophthalmic community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite its lingering impact, most notably the recent labor force shortage, many practices have not only rebounded but used the opportunity to enhance productivity and increase volumes and revenue beyond 2019 baseline numbers. “With all this uncertainty, should I even bother benchmarking?” ask some administrators. “How long should I wait to compare my practice results to other practices?” Based on my professional experience, I encourage continuous benchmarking and will share some preliminary 2020 and 2021 results.
