Thirty years ago, my career was on a fast track—to termination. During my first year of employment, my boss continuously told me, “Patty, stop stepping on toes!” I had no idea what that meant. What I did know is that I was very frustrated. I seemed to be getting feedback that felt critical and unclear. I did not know what I needed to address to correct the behavior my boss did not like. I instinctively knew that if I did not do something different, and soon, I would lose my job.
