During my 40+ years working with doctors, I’ve concluded that physician leadership generally falls into two categories: those who are admirably effective versus those who generate resentment and, therefore, resistance. Admirable physician leaders inspire both staff and patients to follow their lead with loyalty and helpful cooperation. On the other hand, off-putting, disruptive physicians are morale killers whose behavior not only erodes performance and drives employees toward greener pastures (often finding new employment among the competition), but also represents potential legal liability to the practice.
