How Telehealth is Changing the Practice of Healthcare

Until recently, telehealth was used in the United States in only a few situations, typically those involving electronic communications to provide remote care for patients in rural or medically underserved communities. All that changed with COVID-19. In ophthalmology and indeed throughout the healthcare sector, the rapid shutdown of almost all non-essential surgeries, procedures, and in-person visits brought practice operations nearly to a halt. Traditional methods for diagnosis and treatment were, at least temporarily, too dangerous to patients, doctors, and staffs to use. Healthcare delivery had to be reimagined.
