I’ve quoted Sheryl Sandberg to my team many times: “Careers are jungle gyms, not ladders.” I’ve certainly had that experience, with a career path that has taken many twists and turns. In my clinical career, I had the privilege of being mentored and trained by James Gills, MD, an innovator in cataract surgery. With his encouragement, after six consecutive years of studying for certification exams, I flew to the JCAHPO headquarters in Minneapolis for the COMT skills test. After a palm-sweating day of demonstrating clinical skills, I achieved what I thought was the pinnacle of my career: I became a COMT. I promised myself that I would never take another exam.
