As ophthalmic professionals, we are all aware of the nation-wide ophthalmic tech shortage. It seems the many private and university-based practices in my local area are all fighting for the same limited pool of talent. The résumés we receive from that limited pool generally display a history of job-hopping, as many techs change employers every year or two. These employment shifts seem to correlate to increases in wage, varying benefits, proximity to employment, and/or changing environments to gain additional skill sets, opportunities, and aptitudes. It makes sense that techs want to work at a practice that is competitive in all these aspects, but how does your practice stay ambitious in a market where the demand outweighs the supply, practices recruit new staff by offering wages that exceed normal pay bands, and competing practices aren’t averse to poaching your techs?
