ASCRS•ASOA Releases Updated Medicare Participation Kit to Help You Understand Your Options for 2017

ASCRS•ASOA has updated its annual Medicare Participation Kit to assist members understand and choose their Medicare participation option for the upcoming year. The kit includes a summary of Medicare participation options, such as participating provider, non-participating provider, and private contracting. In addition, it provides sample patient letters for practices not accepting new Medicare patients or practices opting out of Medicare, as well as a sample private contract and private contracting affidavit. Physicians who wish to sign or terminate a participation agreement must do so during the open enrollment period and their decision must be postmarked no later than December 31, 2016.

As a reminder, 2017 is the first performance period for the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), which will impact 2019 payments, created by the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA). CMS has provided flexibility for the first year to help physicians avoid a penalty under the system. The Medicare Participation Kit includes the first performance year options. Full details of the MIPS program are available at the ASCRS MACRA Center webpage. MACRA also includes an annual 0.5% update to the conversion factor for the years 2015 to 2019.
