Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Announces Forthcoming Proposed Meaningful Use Rule; Indicates Proposed Changes Requested by the Medical Community Including a 90-Day Reporting Period in 2015

CMS announced it intends to release a proposed rule that would likely offer much-needed reforms to the EHR Meaningful Use Incentive Program. Among the changes that could be proposed are shortening the 2015 reporting period from the full year to 90 days, increased flexibility, realignment with other long-term goals, and a reduction of reporting burdens on providers. ASCRS•ASOA has joined with the AMA and others in the medical community to advocate for a shorter 2015 reporting period and recommended other improvements to the program.

ASCRS•ASOA members should watch for an additional regulatory alert when the proposed rule is released.

We are also expecting a Stage 3 proposed rule to be released in the coming weeks. In today’s announcement, CMS indicated it will be separate from the expected proposed rule announced today.

ASCRS•ASOA will be submitting written comments on both rules. We will keep you updated.
