Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to Present Report on Infections Following LASIK Due to Portable Humidifier Use

ASCRS was recently notified by the CDC that the agency will be making a presentation this Wednesday, May 4 at 3:25 p.m. at the Annual Epidemic Intelligence Service Conference in Atlanta, GA on a study it conducted on an outbreak of patient corneal infections secondary to Mycobacterium Chelonae in a single facility associated with portable humidifier use during LASIK surgery. This issue has been addressed in the past, and therefore, we believe the majority of our members do not use portable humidifiers due to the risk of contamination. However, at the request of the CDC, we are sharing the information with our members. We will continue to keep you updated.
