ASOA Board of Directors Primer
Interested in serving on the ASOA Board of Directors? Here's what you should know:
Overview
There are 9 seats on the ASOA Board of Directors. One seat is filled by the NBCOE chairperson and one seat is filled by a physician liaison to the ASCRS. All other representatives are elected by the ASOA membership. Terms are for 2-years. Board Members may be re-elected for two additional consecutive terms for a total of 6 years on the Board.
Duties of the Board
Board members participate in monthly conference calls to discuss association business. Each board member chairs a standing committee and is responsible for finding committee members for that group. Board members report back committee progress to the full board. The Board meets face-to-face once per year at the ASOA Congress.
Officers
Within the Board of Directors, there are four officers: President, President-Elect, Vice President and Immediate Past President. Individuals hold offices for 1 year terms. All officers must hold the Certified Ophthalmic Executive (COE) designation. Seats are filled through rotation. For example, the vice president is elected by the Board of Directors. At the completion of one year, the vice president rotates to the seat of the president-elect. At the completion of another year, the president-elect rotates to the seat of president. At the completion of one additional year, the president rotates to immediate past president.
Duties of Officers
The President presides at all meetings of the Board, appoints committees, committee members and committee chairs (except the Nominating Committee), and performs such other duties as custom and parliamentary usage may require.
The President-Elect performs the customary duties of the office, as directed by the President, and assumes all duties of the President in the event the President is unable or unavailable to serve.
The Vice-President performs the customary duties of the office, as directed by the President, and assumes all duties of the President-Elect in the event the President-Elect is unable or unavailable to serve.
The Immediate Past President chairs the Nominating Committee and performs such other duties as may be assigned, from time to time, by the President or the Board.
